The Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) has officially raised the stakes for the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship, unveiling a record-breaking $35,000 total prize pool for the 2026 showpiece in Monrovia, Liberia.

  • Monrovia Ready for Historic Debut
  • Major Wins for Top 20 Players
  • Player-Centric Reforms

In a move that redefines the 32-year history of the competition, PANASA confirmed that the eventual King of African Scrabble will walk away with a $10,000 grand prize. This represents a staggering 100% increase from previous editions and marks the highest individual payout ever seen on the continent.

Monrovia Ready for Historic Debut

For the first time since the championship’s inception in 1994, Liberia will host the flagship biennial event. The prestigious Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex on Tubman Boulevard will welcome the continent’s elite word-smiths from October 21 to 25, 2026.

Major Wins for Top 20 Players

Departing from the tradition of rewarding only a handful of elite finishers, PANASA’s new “inclusive” reward structure ensures that the top 20 players will now earn cash prizes.

The breakdown of the top tier includes:

  • 1st Place: $10,000

  • 2nd Place: $5,000

  • 3rd Place: $3,500

  • 4th Place: $3,000

  • 5th Place: $2,250

Beyond the cash, the top three finishers will hoist specially designed trophies, a move by organizers to elevate the championship’s prestige and profile across the globe.

“The National Scrabble Association of Liberia has submitted the largest tournament budget in our history. We are fine-tuning logistics, from visas to accommodation, to ensure a seamless experience for all players.” — PANASA Officials

Player-Centric Reforms

Despite the massive spike in prize money, organizers have frozen registration fees for quota players at 2022 levels. This strategic decision aims to lower the financial barrier to entry and encourage a diverse field of participants from across Africa and the diaspora.

With the largest budget ever recorded for the event, PANASA is urging national associations to begin early preparations and circulate tournament details to eligible players immediately.
