A police constable with the Borno State Police Command, Mohammed Alhaji Muhammad, has returned N2.6 million mistakenly paid into his bank account.
The command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, confirmed the development while briefing journalists in Maiduguri on Monday. He also shared photos of the officer in a Facebook post on Friday, February 13, 2026.
The incident gained public attention after a Facebook user, Bello Jafar, praised the constable for what he described as a rare act of honesty. Jafar revealed that Muhammad, a customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA), quickly reported the funds after they were wrongly transferred by a Moniepoint user.

According to Daso, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the officer for a meeting upon learning of the incident.
Muhammad, who works in the command’s insurance office, reportedly received the credit alert last Thursday and immediately realised the money was not his. The next day, he obtained permission and went to his bank to report the unexpected deposit and requested that the necessary steps be taken to reverse it.
The bank traced the transfer to a UBA branch in Sokoto State and contacted the branch manager. The constable later signed a consent form authorising the reversal of the N2.6 million to the rightful owner.
Daso added that during his meeting with the commissioner, Muhammad detailed the steps he took to ensure the money was returned.
Explaining his motivation, the spokesperson said the officer told the commissioner he was aware of the negative perceptions surrounding the police and felt compelled to uphold the values of discipline and integrity instilled in him during training.
