The Federal Capital Territory Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has honoured Olohundare Moshood Jimoh with the “Best Crime Fighter of the Year” award in recognition of his achievements in security management and policing reforms during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.

The award will officially be presented during the opening ceremony of the NUJ 2026 Press Week scheduled for May 19 at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

This year’s Press Week is themed “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation,” reflecting growing national conversations around media responsibility, democratic stability, and information integrity ahead of the next general elections.

According to the NUJ FCT Council, AIG Jimoh earned the recognition due to his extensive efforts in strengthening public safety, reducing crime, and improving collaboration between the police and media practitioners during his time in Lagos.

In a nomination letter jointly signed by NUJ FCT Chairman Grace Ike and Secretary Jide Oyekunle, the council praised the police chief for implementing intelligence-driven policing strategies that reportedly contributed to operational successes against armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, cybercrime, and street violence across Lagos State.

The union also highlighted his emphasis on proactive and technology-supported policing methods, including enhanced K9 operations, surveillance coordination, rapid-response systems, and data-focused crime prevention initiatives.

“Under your exemplary leadership as Lagos State Commissioner of Police, you transformed public safety through innovative strategies, including enhanced K9 operations, rapid response to media harassment cases, and data-driven crime reduction,” the NUJ stated in the letter.

Beyond crime fighting, the NUJ acknowledged AIG Jimoh’s response to incidents involving journalists and media professionals.

The council noted that his swift interventions in cases of harassment, intimidation, or threats against journalists helped strengthen confidence among members of the press and reinforced cooperation between security agencies and the media.

According to the union, his leadership style encouraged stronger partnerships involving journalists, civil society organisations, community leaders, and other security institutions, helping to improve intelligence sharing and public trust.

“This award celebrates your unique blend of tactical brilliance and collaborative spirit, distinguishing you as one of Nigeria’s foremost crime fighters whose efforts positively impacted both public security and media freedom,” the statement added.

AIG Jimoh currently heads the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command, overseeing police operations in Lagos and Ogun states.

A native of Kwara State, he joined the Nigeria Police Force in 2000 and has served in several operational, investigative, administrative, and public relations capacities across the country.

Before becoming Commissioner of Police for Lagos State in 2025, he previously served as Force Public Relations Officer, where he became widely known for his communication style and engagement with the public.

Over the years, he has worked in commands and formations, including the Federal Capital Territory, Cross River, Oyo, and Gombe states, while also participating in the African Union Mission in Sudan.

AIG Jimoh has attended several professional security and leadership courses both within Nigeria and internationally. His previous recognitions include the Presidential Award for Public Relations Personality of the Year, presented by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in 2017.
