The Super Falcons will head into the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as the continent’s highest-ranked side after maintaining their 36th-place position in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking.
The rankings, released on Thursday, saw the reigning WAFCON champions maintain their 36th-place position globally while retaining their status as Africa’s top-ranked women’s team. Despite back-to-back friendly victories over Senegal earlier this month, the Super Falcons were unable to climb higher in the standings.
Nigeria edged the Lionesses 2-1 on June 5 before cruising to a 3-0 victory three days later.
Among African teams, South Africa remain Nigeria’s nearest rivals in the rankings. Banyana Banyana climbed one place to 57th in the world following a mixed international window that saw them suffer a 5-0 loss to Japan before bouncing back with a remarkable 1-0 victory over the same opposition.
Ghana slipped one spot to 60th globally but continue to rank among Africa’s top sides as they pursue their maiden WAFCON crown. Hosts Morocco, who finished runners-up at the last edition, also dropped in the rankings and now sit 64th in the world. Zambia fell one place to 65th despite recording a convincing 3-0 win over Zimbabwe in their latest outing.
The next FIFA women’s world rankings will be released on 20 October, 2026.
