The Inspector-General of Police has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening operational capacity and discipline, as he oversaw the passing-out of 1,068 newly trained constables in Akwa Ibom State.

The constables underwent intensive firearms and tactical training in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government as part of efforts to tackle crime and criminality across the state.

The initiative marks a significant policy shift, as it is the first time police constables are being trained and authorised to carry firearms immediately after training, rather than waiting for several years of service. The move aligns with the Federal Government’s community policing agenda aimed at improving grassroots security.

While in the state for the ceremony, the IGP also held a meeting with officers of the Akwa Ibom State Command, stressing the importance of mentorship and leadership. He charged senior officers to guide and mentor the young constables, noting that their conduct would reflect the standards and integrity of the Force.

The IGP issued a stern warning to Commissioners of Police nationwide, reminding them of their responsibility to take full charge of their commands.

He emphasised that they would be held vicariously liable for the actions of officers under their supervision.

Addressing recent developments in Delta State, the IGP condemned the conduct of an Assistant Superintendent of Police whose actions brought disrepute to the Force. He disclosed that the officer has been dismissed and will be prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction. He further warned that any officer who violates Force Order 237 on the use of firearms would henceforth face dismissal and prosecution.

The police boss also urged officers to demonstrate responsibility in their respective areas of duty, stressing that professionalism remains the cornerstone of effective policing.

He commended the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State for his exemplary leadership, noting that the state is the first in the country to issue certificates to the newly trained constables. The IGP also expressed gratitude to the Akwa Ibom State Government for its sustained support to the Nigeria Police Force, assuring that the Force would reciprocate with greater commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

In his closing remarks, the IGP thanked officers of the command for their sacrifices and dedication to duty, a gesture that was met with resounding applause.

Earlier, in a vote of thanks, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 6 appreciated the IGP for attending the ceremony despite his busy schedule.

He also commended the Commissioners of Police in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States for their cooperation, which he said has made his assignment easier.

The AIG further lauded the IGP’s decisiveness in handling the Delta State incident and prayed for divine guidance to enable him to succeed in his leadership of the Force.

The training programme covered a wide range of modern policing and combat techniques, including arms drill, tactical movement, vehicle interception, counter-ambush (debussing under fire), tactical progression, weapon handling and maintenance (stripping and assembling), movement under fire, as well as introductory combat craft and dry shooting exercises.
