Mike Abdul Defends Tattoos, Says God Is Not Against Meaningful Body Art

Nigerian gospel singer Mike Abdul has stepped firmly into the ongoing debate over tattoos, insisting that body art does not dishonour God and that spiritual transformation matters far more than unmarked skin.

In a post shared on Instagram on Monday, Abdul argued that tattoos have existed for centuries as symbols of identity, memory, status, covenant, and storytelling across different cultures. He stressed that the presence of ink on the body does not automatically conflict with faith.

According to the singer, the true value of a tattoo lies in its meaning, not in the mark itself. He dismissed claims that tattoos defile the body, describing such views as a misunderstanding of spiritual principles.

“Tattoos don’t dishonour the body,” Abdul wrote. “What dishonours a temple is not writing on the walls. What matters is what the mark points to, not the mark itself. God reads hearts, not skin. Ink without conviction is decoration. Ink with conviction is remembrance.”

He added that a tattoo that inspires gratitude, reinforces identity, or deepens reverence can serve a positive purpose. Abdul maintained that faith reveals itself through transformed lives rather than physical appearance. “Faith is not proven by unmarked skin, but by transformed lives,” he stated.

As criticism intensified online, particularly from Christians who reference Leviticus 19:28 to condemn tattoos, Abdul addressed the issue directly in a follow-up Instagram post on Tuesday. He challenged what he described as selective interpretation of Old Testament laws.

The gospel singer argued that anyone who insists on enforcing the ban on body marks must also observe other Old Testament regulations, including laws on dietary restrictions, mixed fabrics, ceremonial purity, and hair grooming.

“If Leviticus 19:28 were a universal and timeless ban on body marks,” Abdul wrote, “then Christians would also be bound by pagan hair rituals, dietary laws, mixed fabrics, and ceremonial purity laws.”

He reminded his followers that Christian faith rests on grace, not strict adherence to Old Testament legal codes. Citing Romans 6:14, Abdul noted that believers are no longer under the law but under grace. He also referenced Colossians 2:16, urging Christians not to judge one another over food, drink, or religious observances.

Taking his argument further, Abdul drew comparisons between tattoos and circumcision in the Bible. While acknowledging that the two differ in form, he explained that both function as permanent bodily marks and symbols of identity and belonging.

“Circumcision is not a tattoo in form, but it functions like one in meaning,” he wrote. “Both are permanent bodily marks, signs of identity and belonging, visible reminders of covenant, more about what they signify than the act itself.”

He emphasised that circumcision demonstrates that God does not oppose meaningful bodily marks. According to him, the power of circumcision never resided in the flesh itself but in the covenant it represented.

Abdul reinforced his position by referencing the Apostle Paul’s teachings, which stress inward obedience over outward symbols. Quoting Romans 2:25 and 2:29, he noted that external marks hold little value without a transformed heart guided by the Spirit.

“So Scripture itself teaches that external marks without inward obedience are insufficient,” Abdul said. “The consistent biblical position is clear: God is not anti-body. God prioritises meaning, obedience, and transformation. The debate was never mark versus no mark. It has always been heart versus hypocrisy.”

The singer’s comments come amid intense public reactions following a viral social media moment involving popular relationship coach and founder of the David Christian Centre, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo. Okonkwo recently sparked controversy after unveiling a Bible-inspired tattoo on his arm, igniting widespread debate within Nigeria’s Christian community.

PRMedia reports that Okonkwo, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, shared a video of the tattoo process on his official Instagram page. The tattoo features “III: XVI,” a Roman numeral representation of John 3:16, one of Christianity’s most well-known scriptures.

The video opened with a voice-over reading John 3:16, while the footage gradually revealed the tattoo. Okonkwo explained that he chose the tattoo as a form of evangelism, noting that discussions around the tattoo led to the scripture being shared widely across blogs and social media platforms.

“My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo,” he said, “but they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24 hours by almost all blogs.”

Addressing critics directly, Okonkwo argued that no biblical passage explicitly forbids Christians from getting tattoos. He expressed concern that many believers condemn body art without offering clear scriptural justification.

“There’s no scripture that says a child of God cannot have tattoos,” he said, adding that the backlash often lacks solid theological grounding.

As conversations around faith, culture, and personal expression continue to trend online, Abdul’s intervention has added a theological perspective that challenges long-held assumptions, while pushing the Nigerian Christian community toward deeper reflection on grace, meaning, and inner transformation.
